These sketches were for a project in which we had to design a mascot to sell a product. Each person was given an individual target audience, product, and trait to give the mascot.

My themes were as followed:

1) Product- College
2) Target Audience- College Students
3) Trait- Tech-savvy

Initial sketches

Initially, I was at a lost as how to portray something so straightforward, and looked into several colleges as well as my own for ideas. While some colleges lacked an official mascot, those that did tended to have animal mascots more often than not.

Therefore I decided to look into the possibly of an animal mascot. Since the trait was 'tech-savvy', I thought it would be fitting to the theme to choose an animal known for its intelligence

Initial design
I wanted the mascot to be unique in a way, so I went with the octopus. I did some warm up sketches, as I was unfamiliar with sketching octopi in general. Then I came up with the initial sketch below.

While nice, it felt like it took up too much space and failed to the reflect the themes. Therefore I tried a different pose, and found the second one more fitting. In order to further tie the theme together I added small pieces of technology for the octopus to hold: a small notebook, calculator, mouse, and a watch similar to that of a FitBit or Apple watch.

Second design; rough sketch
In conclusion, I am surprisingly pleased with the results, and would love to finish the piece properly by digitally coloring it
