Sketchnotes from a webinar highlighting Portland, Maine's and Jacksonville, Florida's early learning initiatives. These eight pages represent 45 minutes of conversation, including introductory presentations and an open-panel discussion. The real-time raw sketchnotes were subsequently traced and reworked into polished meeting notes, while still keeping the spontaneous look of the original capture. The final polished sketchnotes were distributed to the webinar participants.
These are the original real-time notes taken during the webinar. The raw notes are reviewed with the client, any edits are made ("..keep this, take that out, add in..."), and then the notes are placed onto a lightbox, where they are traced and refined to a higher degree of polish.
Refined pencil versions of the original raw notes are created, and then shown to the client for final approval before inking.
Pencil lines are erased once the inking is completed.
After the pencil lines are erased, additional inking is done to increase black-and-white contrast prior to coloring,
The inked sketchnotes, with color starting to be applied. All coloring is done with Prismacolor Design markers. The sketchnotes are also accompanied by hybrid/digital illustrated infographics, which are colored with digital equivelants of the marker palatte.
Final sketchnotes ready for scanning. The work is done onto letter-sized paper (8.5" x 11"), which allows them to easily be shared via hardcopy, PDFs, and online. Clients have also taken high-res versions of these notes, and blow them up to poster-sized prints for larger presentations.
Why sketchnotes? Because this is what a discussion looks like, and when the discussion is over, the action plans need to be created to carry on the core goals of the meeting. Visual notes create powerful touchpoints that not only connect meeting participants to the moments when topics and issues were discussed, but the with thier hightened level of emotion and cognitive reflection, allow for deeper levels of recollection, thinking, brainstorming, and planning. To get the most out of a meeting, sketchnotes help empower and move forward the meeting's purpose in a way that mere memory or hand-written notes can't.
