Though highly noble and respectable in their vision, the American College of Cardiology's Strategic Plan graphic was a generic triangle structure built in Powerpoint. I was tasked to take the basic triangle, and add the ACC's branding colors and typography styles, without altering the overall layout or structure, which is what you see above.
Next I was asked to "jazz it up" a little, while still working with the basic structure and branding colors. When I printed this version, the illustrator and data visualization artist in me thought "nah; we can do more!"
So I took a pencil and started to doodle all over the original triangle graphic...
...which led to a selection of visual metaphors for the textual contents of the original triangle graphic. As a data visualization artist, I evolved the concepts based on the models of sketchnoting and graphic recording.
The initial visual exploration eventually led to these two concept designs. I presented them to the ACC's communication and marketing department as an option to the original triangle graphic, and the design on top was selected to be the replacement.
I created this rough draft ahead of the digital final. As the triangle represents a structural heirarchy, I had to solve the challenge of working with this layout, and created the visuals at the top of the triangle to best work with the space limitations. Since I didn't have a sketchbook on hand at the College, I crafted my own out of extra, discarded prints from the copying machine, hence the 'ghosted" images behind the sketches.
With the rough and subsequent drafts approved, the refined penciling began ahead of tracing all of the art into vector graphics (what I call the "pre-digital" stage.)

These are the color options that I presented, which is when I realized that green is not the best color for representing health (think back to all of those old cartoons where a sick person was depicted with a green head!)
Here is the final redesigned American College of Cardiology Strategic Plan triangle. The original architecture/hierarchy of the layout has been retained, and the ACC's branding colors and typography have been incorporated, but now with an engaging and though-provoking visual presentation.
