Puistokatu 4

Puistokatu 4, a newly renovated historic building located in Helsinki, Finland, is a space devoted to inclusive, empowering and compassionate climate conversations.

Our task was to build on this important vision and create a timeless brand identity that would extend equally well online and in the physical space. Ultimately, we needed to build a brand that could stand for something bigger than the building. Together with the team of researchers and philanthropists, we created Puistokatu 4 a bold brand platform including naming, visual identity and digital event concept.

At present, environmental discourse is chaotic, divisive and not accessible to everyone. Our design concept builds on the idea of Puistokatu 4 being a platform for calm, collective discussions that help us understand planetary realities and each others’ realities in an open and humane way. We call them Friendly Demonstrations.

For inspiration, we explored protest vernacular through nostalgic black-and-white photography of demonstrations in Helsinki, sourced from the collections of the National Museum of Finland. This culminated in a visual expression based on a collage of elements — from unique combinations of bespoke typefaces, illustrations and evocative photography. A modern take on the DIY posters that typically characterise this world, advocating a new inviting language to promote collaboration, openness and democracy.
