Picnics in Paradise — Cycling from Canada to Patagonia in three years

Book design and bespoke typeface for Jaryd Adair's three-year bicycle trip, spanning fifteen countries from North to South America.

It’s not often that you come across people with such remarkable stories of travel as those from Jaryd. Stories that, well, seem so extravagant that they tickle the very fundamentals of our curiosity, stories that make us want to sit down and listen.

This journey starts in Calgary, Canada by bicycle, with the simple plan of visiting a friend in Argentina, South America to go snowboarding. This innocent idea that originally was intended to span only a few months of time ultimately became a life-changing adventure that lasted three years. The book leads the reader through unknown paths, urban landscapes, and natural environments. It tells of companions along the way and encounters with new faces and their stories, the importance of art and reliance on creativity in times of survival. And finally the mystery of the (symbolic) hummingbird before ending this three-year journey in Patagonia, South America.

The challenge was to create a structure for the book that was able to pay homage to so many individually inspiring stories while preserving the significance of the total adventure. The non-linear arranged sections make this 'coffee table book' accessible and comprehensible for everyone that wants to experience parts of this journey.

To highlight the importance of sustainability and the use of natural materials in production, the whole book is produced with handmade banana leaf paper and other repurposed materials that were carefully processed and crafted by human hands.

Major thanks go out to Tya Chandra and her female taskforce from Saraswati Papers (Bali, Indonesia) that have made great effort to produce this book fully by hand.

Thanks for watching!
