Benetton Live Windows Project: Printed Artefact

Brief

In my final year of university, we were set a brief by Fabrica – Benetton’s communication research centre (http://www.fabrica.it/). The brief was to produce a short time based media piece, that communicated information or a singular message based upon our research and understanding of one of the dates in the United Nations calendar. This was for the United Colours of Benetton’s ‘Live Windows’ Project (http://www.livewindow.it/). We were also required by our tutors to produce a printed artefact alongside our videos, communicating our research, design process, methodologies, rationales, production methods, reflection and analysis.

I created a simple A4 bound booklet that communicated the required topics in detail. I wanted to portray the stages and elements of my video through my design, so I created a full bleed image on every other page of the booklet, displaying elements used in my video in the order that they appear, so that the imagery in my booklet evolved along with the video it supports. I produced a folded broadsheet that sewed into the centre of the booklet, camouflaged against the image on the spread behind it, in order to add an interesting element to the narrative and give the reader a sense of interaction with the piece.

Cardboard case to contain the booklet.
On the front and back I bound a flap showing the Winter stage of my video, that lifts up to reveal the Spring imagery behind it. It is also lined up with the Spring image behind it, communicating the evolution of one season into the other.
Snowflakes used at the start of my video.
The grey paint I mixed for the grey sky background I had at the start of the video.
Painting the grey sky, blue. A shot of the painting process I used to cover up the grey sky in my video. There is a camoflaged broadsheet bound into this section with additional images and information, giving the reader an interactive element to navigate through.
Broadsheet insert opened up.
The leaves I cut out of coloured paper for my tree.
The beads I used to represent blosson growing on the trees.
The ground flowers which bloom at the end of my video, which I produced by hand on a sewing machine.
