Brief

To produce a hoarding design to run along outside the west side of the V&A museum in London. It is to be placed there until 2016 when they open up the west side as a new entrance to visitors, leading to new exhibition spaces below ground and a courtyard. As the hoarding was to be there for 4 years, it had to have a timeless design and it was important the design should reflect the artefacts within the V&A as well as the local community and surroundings outside.

Solution

I decided to take the term 'reflect' very literally, wanting to produce an interactive hoarding that would allow people to get involved with it and help to promote the artefacts in the museum. I decided to choose fashion artefacts and place images of them onto mirrors on the hoarding, so that people could see themselves wearing a particular artefact, such as a tudor dress or a top hat and tails. Wanting to make it appropriate for all ages and men and women, I used dresses, hats and outfits on different sized mirrors so that everyone could get involved!

Photograph tests: To see people interacting with their reflections and fashion items.

Final hoarding designs: Super-imposed onto photographs I took of the V&A's west side.

Close up imagery of the hoarding design in sections.

Dresses for women (or men if they wished!) to "try on".
Fun hats and headwear for children to imagine wearing.
Womens hats and a man's top hat and jacket from the regency era.
A Victorian couple.
Some outfits for children to "try on" anf some men's hats.
A lady's court dress from the 1700's.
