Brief

Given a "moment in time" to research, the task was to create a logo/brand based on the events or people involved. I was given the event "The abdication of Edward VIII in 1936".

Edward VIII fell in love with a woman named Wallis Simpson, a twice divorced American. Edward, as King, was the nominal head of the Church of England, which didn't allow divorced people to remarry if their ex-spouse(s) were still alive. Wallis was percieved as politically and socially unsuitable by the Church and by Government, due to her previous failed marriages, so parliament wouldn't allow his marriage to her. So on the 10th December 1936, Edward abdicated his claim to the throne, in order to be with and marry the woman he loved.

Solution

I was fascinated by this declaration of love. Giving up the throne, the chance to be King, in order to live a normal life with, and marry the woman he loved. I wanted to create a simple logo which symbolised Edwards hugely romantic gesture, choosing love over a crown and a kingdom.

The logo I designed was a letter 'K' representing the King, Edward. The 'upper arm' of the 'K' is outstretched towards a heart, the King's love, as though holding the heart aloft, in adoration of it. While the bottom 'foot' of the 'K' is solidly stamping down on the an upturned crown, which represents Edward's refusal to wear the crown and be King. It symbolises his gesture of true love and defiance in his choice. I added the tag line, 'the fallen king', representing that his 'fall' from Kingship was because he had fallen in love.
