Virgin Galactic is a commercial spaceflight company which plans to provide suborbital spaceflights to space tourists. The brief was to design a range of coins for The Royal Mint to celebrate this moment in history.
My concept was to bridge the gap of what seems quite unrealistic to many, by encouraging people to interact with space through the coins. Each coin features a star constellation, represented by holes, which allow them to be held up to match the constellation in the night sky.
There are four packs representing the four seasons in which you can see certain stars. Each pack contains two coins, one for stargazing looking north, and one for looking south. There are instructions on where to look in the sky and when, and also information about each constellation and how far away it is from earth.
The promotional campaign is based around the idea of connection, which the collector would experience when finding each star constellation. ‘Connect with the Stars’ is inspired by dot-to-dot puzzles, and the advert has eight coin shaped holes, relating to the eight coins in the set.
