N.BIO - A Punctuated Equilibrium

‘Punctuated Equilibrium’ is a speculative design project that explores the consequences of global warming on sustainable food production, through the focus of a hypothetical pharmaceutical tech company N.Bio, which specialises in the research and creation of experimental sustainable food products derived from algae and the processes which may be involved in such research.

Sea levels will rise due to environmental neglect, and flooding will make traditional farming grounds untenable, as a result, in most regions, algae will bloom and thrive due to the increasingly warm temperatures.

Algae is highly efficient at turning sunlight, water and CO2 into oxygen, vitamins and nutrients, with cultivation using only a fraction of the resources of traditional crops. Due to its fast extremely fast-growing nature and density in nutrients, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, algae is a viable option for cultivation, in terms of sustainable food production and pharmaceuticals.

In evolutionary biology, the “punctuated equilibrium” theory developed by Niles Eldredge and his colleague Stephen Jay Gould proposes a revision of Darwin's work on the evolution of biological species by introducing the idea that the development of new species does not happen in small frequent steps, but through rapid bursts. As the environment changes, newer and better adapted species suddenly appear.
