Wellington wayshowing projections | LUX Light Festival

Wellington LUX is a festival at the juncture of light, space and interaction. In 2013 the four day event included 18 artworks by international artists from Germany, the Netherlands, UK, Norway, South Korea, Australia and Mexico. The installations were set up along the waterfront and in alleyways around downtown Wellington, New Zealand.

The brief was to design a temporary wayfinding system, with a zero dollar budget, that helped visitors navigate the city and find the installations at night.

The solution was found in the medium of the festival — light. To make the project happen we looked to involve the local community, asking to borrow old slide projectors. We then highlighted key or unique projection locations, interesting facades and buildings to project from. Once again we asked for the community to get behind the festival by approaching the tenants of our highlighted buildings.

Once set up the projectors threw typography onto facades in the environment generating a temporary wayshowing system at night, exactly when it was needed.Typographically the slides were designed to be simplistic by themselves, however, once projected, the environment distorted the type giving it unique character.
