I'LL PLAY IT FIRST AND TELL YOU WHAT IT IS LATER
A one-night exhibition on applied improvisation in visual making processes

October 2018 marked our fifth anniversary. To celebrate the next phase, we decided to produce and present brand new work, all based on our recently developed design method. Inspired by jazz and its improvisatory techniques, we organised fifty visual jamsessions in which we combined free making within a changing set of rules. Our one-night exhibition “I’ll play it first, and tell you what it is later” was born out of these sessions, and revealed how intuitive creation and conceptual design can — and should — go hand in hand. 

We translated the visual output of these sessions into a series of six A0 prints that refer back to the core principles of jazz improvisation: 1. Free Play, 2. Bend/Break/Blend, 3. Repetition, 4. Endless Variation, 5. Present Tense and 6. Call and Response. In addition to the exhibition, we asked Iris Cuppen to write an essay on (jazz)improvisation. We turned her essay into a visual one. ​​​​​​​
