Taichung World Flora Exposition Discovery Pavilion

Our team was invited by Cogitoimage International Co., Ltd. to participate in the unit creation of for the Discovery Pavilion of the Forest Expo Site at the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition (hereinafter referred to as the Flora Expo). The design philosophy of the Discovery Pavilion is “Seeing Half the World in Taichung,” narrating the ecological journey from 0 to 3886 meters above sea level along Dajia River.

Therefore, we selected five characters with the radical “water” (氵) as the representative for each sea level block, which are, respectively, 涵 (to include), 沛 (abundant), 涓 (brook), 澗 (mountain stream), and 澄 (to purify), converting the status of the character into visual connotations. The images on the walls and the floors are switched based on this as the main core.

In order to enhance the feeling of the continuous rising of sea level, a few methods are used in the design, for example “the overall color temperature is changed from being warm to being cool,” attempting to present the changes in somatosensory temperature through visuals, where the images “start from the bottom of the sea and end in the universe” and “organisms from different sea levels appear one after another,” etc.

In addition to matching the curatorial context of the venue, “High-Degree Immersion and Meaningful Afterthoughts” were our design missions, so how to delicately handle “perception” had become the most important task.

The three major items in dealing with perception have to do with eyes, ears, and body. For the eyes, video clips are, without a doubt, a great narrative form; thus, after understanding the overall concept, the team from MoonShine VFX completed the production of a fascinating film using fantasy-like visual styles and smooth rhythms, which is projected onto an 18-meter wide curved surface. For the ears, Giong Lim, a well-known sound worker, used the natural soundscape as the base and carried out the formation of the sounds in the entire space in coordination with the video content. For the body, we created a calculated visual with real-time interaction on the floor, so the location and movement of the audience become part of the image.

Through the aforementioned combination of forms, a space for immersion that covers all types of senses is completed.
