Press:: Learning by Playing: Video Games in the classroom

In Space Place Architecture, students step into the role of game designers who are challenged by a team of architects interested in exploring videogames as a sketching tool to think about the design of architectural spaces. The architects put forth a series of game design challenges, through an AIA Blog, providing students with the opportunity to convince them through the games they create. The focus is specifically on the relationship between the design of a space and the kinds of activities, feeling, experiences, and interactions that can happen in that space as a result. With each challenge students begin to make concrete connections between ideas of architecture and ideas of game design. The students build games in both 2D and 3D game creation environments as part of this exploration.

The ultimate challenge of the trimester is to create a set of games that envision the design of future Q2L spaces. The goal of these games is to provide the architects with models of spaces they would like to see in the new Q2L building hence requiring students to pull together their understanding of architectural concepts, blue prints, floor plans, space, emotions, activities and everything learned so far in order to demonstrate their ideas and concepts.
