Long Live Painting!

Exhibition Catalogue design for Museum of Fine Arts Budapest

The book is the catalogue of the second station of the Classical Contemporary German series of the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts: the exhibition depicting the oeuvre of Jörg Immendorff by the title of Immendorff. Long Live Painting!

The exhibition commemorates the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Immendorff was one of the first visual artists in Germany whose works, even in the 1970s, dealt with the idea of a “cultural and spiritual” reunification of the nation. The artist who was active in politics and who also took on social roles, concentrated on the art of painting, i.e. on flat surfaces, on oil and canvas.

We therefore selected a classical binding solution for the cover: canvas binding in a low-key grey with the name JÖRG IMMENDORFF embossed on it. To spice up the classical binding somewhat we used three ribbon bookmarks in the three colours of the German flag: black, red and yellow.

The catalogue consists of two main parts. The first section is the studies written in connection with the artistic work, an interview, documentary photos and exhibited works. The second part, sort of complementing the first, entails reminiscences from artists who worked in Hungary during the same years. We separated these two markedly dissimilar content parts visually by using different paper and layout. The first part was printed on art paper to reflect the brightness of the art, while the “Hungarian reflections” were placed on kraft paper with a brownish tone. The first unit consists of only the main text with footnotes and no images. We placed documentary photos randomly to break the monotony of this large volume of text.

We designed a round logo for the “Hungarian reflections” which we used on the cover page of the chapter and as a sticker on the main cover of the catalogue.
