Freedom to Read Week 2018

Freedom to Read Week 2018
It’s nice to be invited back! My work last year with Gil Martinez made an impact on the Book and Periodical Council, and we were excited to design the promotional and informational kit for Freedom to Read Week 2018.

This year’s illustration by Jeff Lemire proved to be inspirational: beautiful watercolours, elemental forces of nature... I decided on a main colour palette fairly early on. A vivid red from the floating books, a beautiful teal from the monster’s tentacle, and black. Secondary colours (blues, greens, greys) were sampled from the sky and sea. Finishing out the secondary palette: browns from the sandstorm and a surprisingly-hot green from the floating books. Two yellows from the books became the tertiary colours.
