department of Design (doD) was founded in 1996 by five partners but quickly became only three including myself (design), Tom Kostelac (production) and Honza Fleischhans (print). doD was a full service design atelier based in Zizkov and with many large and small international and local clients.In the later years doD became highly specialised in the field of property development.
The design of the logo, the name and above all the stationary was inspired by my love of bureaucratic forms and documents. When I arrived in the Czech Republic I was amazed by and collected many old bank books, identity books, stamps (printing), kolky (payment stamps) and forms from the communist period and even before during the German occupation. This also inspired my font choices such as Futura (small all caps) and Melior, which were very common in the communist times. In 1998 the doD letterhead won an award of excellence from Communication Arts in California. Here you can see our bureaucratic greetings card, job info stickers for filing, business cards and letterhead. We also designed wrapping paper and bureaucratic notepads every year.
