A Midsummer Night’s Dreams

A Midsummer Night’s Dreams (Harlekin Puppet Theatre, Puppets, 2017)

The beings and fairies of the forest were displayed as puppets in this play. Large, lightning puppets were made of foiled metal and, when they were in motion, their shapes recalled fishes, birds and spiders. They were designed to be the opposite of urban people. These puppets, with the help of long sticks, were animated above doors which also functioned as screens. Each figure had one inbuilt moving part – such as flapping wings or moving
jaws – which contributed to the playful and dynamic movement of the forest beings.
