Pinocchio (Vaskakas Puppet Theater, 2017)

The play was staged in the new building of Győr’s Vaskakas Theater. The decision was made to use masks instead of puppets, due to the size of the stage and for dramaturgical reasons. I designed two mask-like heads and masks for four characters on stage, and constructed minimalist yet impressive set pieces that were functional and could be pulled from the stage easily. The huge see-saws expressed both the playful nature of children and the ever-present uncertainties of life. Several scenes recurred during the play so it was important that the sets were flexible and could be given new layers of meaning by modifications in materials, tools, or lights as the play progressed. The masks were also developed with this concept in mind.
