SPAIN 2017 Chapter 2 Paragraph 3

ALQUEZAR
Chapter 2 Paragraph 3
11 August 2017
The name is all a program. The images confirm it.
We reach this micro-village of 290 breathing souls, directly from the Monastery of San Juan de la Pena (paragraph 1), having traveled 140 km through the impressive North Aragonese territory, at the foot of the Pyrenees, and where the eagles, perhaps, are more numerous than the inhabitants. The sun hits hard, but the temperature, does not exceed 24° C.
The Moorish fortress, known as al-Qasr, was erected by Sheikh Jalaf Ibn Rasid at the beginning of the 9th century, over a rocky spur overlooking the valley and the underlying passages.
It was reconquered by Christians in 1083, and on the remains of the Muslim fortress, the Colegiata de Santa Maria la Mayor was built.
Although much of this is from the 16th century, there are still interesting Romanesque elements, including the double colonnade of the cloister, whose columns have carved some Scenes from the Old Testament; not least the frescoes.
After a good and succulent dinner with indigenous flavors, as we leave the village, we become involved in the many summer festivities of the country, and we enjoy a whole Aragonese live that, if anything else, helps us to "assimilate” what we have gobbled.
It takes 130 km before arriving at our base camp of Zaragoza, but we do not give up to take the evening shot. (Notice: non-residents must leave their car in a defilant parking lot above the hill in front. Take note of it when you leave the village, and save some energy for the climb).
