PALACIO REAL DE LA GRANJA DE SAN ILDEFONSO
Chapter 6 Paragraph 2
15 August 2017
Less known than the previous one but just as beautiful as to deserve the nickname of "Little Versailles", (a pity for the maintenance of the fountains), it was wanted by Philip V in 1721 as his residence for retirement; unfortunately, in August of the same year in which it was finished (1724), he had to put back the crown for the death of his son Louis I, heir to the throne.
After his return to the throne, Philip V ordered to extend both the gardens and the palace, commissioning the work to the Roman architect Andrea Procaccini.
In 1736 was called the architect Filippo Juvarra (a very well known architect in Italy), ordering him to build a new facade along the central axis of the garden, works later terminated by his disciple Giambattista Sacchetti: the resulting architectural ensemble of the building has therefore become very Italian.
The central element of the building is the Royal Chapel or Colegiata; next to the main altar is the Royal Pantheon where Philip V and his second wife rest, Isabella Farnese the Parmesan.
Although the building suffered a devastating fire in 1918, fortunately it retains almost all the decorations of the time. Much effort was made in the construction of the gardens, such as the sculptural ornament made by French artists who had worked in the palaces of Louis XIV, in Marly: La Granja is the main example of this type of formal French garden full of sculptural decorations.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to photograph inside. So, you have to see the interior personally, my dear friends. But it's really worth it!
