Repurposing an old TTC sign making facility for a community centre for youth that incorporates a culinary programme, a recording studio, a multipurpose room for dance classes, and a computer classroom.
The centre attempts to represent the city and its skyline on the exterior, and the grid of Toronto in the interior. Teenagers are a very dynamic group, constantly changing and the building has to offer a design that shows that dynamism. The grid has been turned 90 degrees to create that feeling inside, taking inspiration of mosaic work and graffitti work that the students have created.
A cold frame gardening proposal has been designed for the rooftop to take full advantage of the sunlight as there are no tall buildings around.
The issue of security and safety has been also adressed and the admin area has been designed for maximum visual connections around the building.
An 'interior' space has been created outside to connect the urban neighbourhood and its needs to the culinary program through the rooftop gardening and to the visual arts program by the cold frames that also serve as an urban art installation on the structure.
The glass boxes are held by these plastic frames. The boxes can be clipped on and off as required and are used for growing herbs and vegetables.
