Don Ichino's profile

St. Jude Medical Center with KMD Architects

The Southwest Addition to St. Jude Medical Center occupies a prominent campus location at the intersection of Valencia Mesa Drive and Harbor Boulevard. The uphill aspect northward along Harbor Boulevard emphasizes the essentially horizontal composition of the principal elevations.

The architecture of the Southwest Addition is referential to the (North Tower) and (West Wing) both in material and general architectural disposition. The horizontal emphasis of the general massing is consistent with the fenestration and overhanging elements of the North Tower (shelf roof and brise soleil).

The principal (west) elevation is bookended by special elements- a stair tower at the north announces the principal entry to the consolidated facility. A cantilevered pod containing a staff lounge and office is a visual counterpart at the southwest corner
