Within the UK there are an estimated 6 million security cameras (CCTV) in operation, both in the private and public sector. Staggeringly, an individual can be expected to be caught on security camera at least 30 times a day. So, with security camera now playing an integral role in all of our lives, the big question to ask ihas to be that of: do security cameras defer crime? The simple answer is yes, they do deter crime, and below we explain why security cameras are a good thing. 

Catch criminals mid act

One obvious benefit, and the reason that security cameras deter crime, is the possibility of being caught in the act. If a criminal is caught 'mid act' on camera, then there is visual evidence of their crime. This, in turn, leads to them being caught and then removed from the streets. 

The camera is proof

As already stated the security camera is physical and 'hard' proof of a crime that has been committed. The chance that an offender could be filmed or even photographed commuting a crime, is often a big enough deterrent to stop then from breaking the law. 

CCTV equals a safe and populated area

When an area has an increase in the installation of CCTV cameras, this then often results in an increase in individuals visiting the area, as it is deemed to be safer. These individuals also become the eyes abs ears of policing, and will report crime, making the area even more safe. 

Staffed areas

Areas with CCTV cameras also often have staffed security or police patrolling the streets. This is often in areas that are deemed to be high risk areas. This extra police presence ensures that criminals are more likely to be caught, or will deter offenders from commuting a crime. 

Encourages increased safety

The great news about security cameras in public spaces is that it encourages people to become more security conscious and aware about their surroundings. This in turn will reduce crime. 

Less crime is committed

When an individual is made aware that they are in the presence of security cameras, then they will act differently. This is true for both public and private security cameras. An individual will not want to appear looking suspicious on a camera. 

Therefore, there are many reasons why security cameras deter crime. It is widely stipulated that the more obvious a security camera is made to the general public, then the more effective it will be at deterring crime.
