Block creats a symbolic eulogy to solid wood, as if the trees had already inscribed these forms onto themselves, and were serenely waiting for the gesture of the designer to reveal them. The decision to “adopt a narrative that announces the origin of the wood (tree) and uses primitive trunks (benches) and stumps (supports) from the tree.” We transcribe this narrative, in a modernist approach, into simple geometric forms. A rectangular block of wood and U shaped feet constructed in solid steel that are cut, welded, metalized and painted, allowing them to be mechanically fixed to the pavement. Forms with which he intends “to build the basis of a modular system of urban furniture composed of a minimum lexicon of elements, guaranteeing the greatest versatility in its usage.” Short stays The cutting down of a tree is imagined. After the trunk falls, and is still held to the ground by its roots, the possibility of a support appears. This proposal for a “support envisaged for moments of brief rest, where we sit ‘almost standing’, would allow a flexible occupation of the space in which it is placed, whether by juxtaposition or through a free composition.” Prolonged stays Imagine once more the same tree being cut down. The trunk that lies on the floor appears in our imagination as a long bench. This object, by the same formal and constructive logic, was “envisaged for moments of rest or extended use, where we sit, lean, lie or eat. It is constituted by two elements: the back — of identical design to the support for short stays, differing from it in its overall height — and the long bench, supported by two feet constructed of metalized and painted solid steel.” Read Less
