Historic Life - Magazine Design & Layout

A map of the northbank of Jacksonville FL, Illustrated by Lauren Trump. I worked with Lauren providing art direction to develop two maps, one for the northbank and one for the southbank. Each map highlights the key neighborhoods and gepgraphical icons in the area. We wanted a hand drawn map that had a historical yet light hearted feel.
Historic Life is a publication published by The Resident Community News Group in Jacksonville, FL. It serves as a guide to the historical neighborhoods of Jacksonville for those who are either moving or looking to live in the area. The newcomers guide is filled with all sorts of useful information such as lists of all the local schools, hospitals, churches, parks as well as things to do in the area. It also gives a breif history of the neigborhoods along with a glimpse into their near future.

As the Art Director and sole designer for this publication i was tasked with designing the guide from cover to cover. I had a short production schedule to work with, about a month total, to create the design, layout the content and edit all imagery of the 96 page magazine. I also worked with a local designer/artist Lauren Trump to develop two hand drawn maps of the north and southbanks of the St.Johns river that contain the historical neighborhoods of Jacksonville.

The main challenge was to create a publication that represented the historical nature of the neighborhoods while maintaining a "Floridian" vibe. We opted for an aqua/teal color with a accent of gold which keeps the guide looking clean and refreshing. The other goal was to showcase as much of the beauty in the area through imagery. Each section of the guide opens with a grid of beautiful and relavent images. More specific or supporting imagery is used on subsequent pages.

First and foremost this is a guide book filled mostly with lists. Lists of this type are naturally not very interesting to look at but they contain very important information. So the main goal is for the content to be clean and organized so it can be consumed and interpreted as efficently as possible. The book keeps a strict and uniform design pattern throughout that is broken up by the opening pages of each section featuring the 1/3 teal panel with an intro and a gridded wall of imagery. This allows the reader to quickly flip through and see where a section ends and begins.

Historic Life is an anual publication and was produced on thick 7'' x 9'' glossy cardstock. 30,000+ copies are distributed throughout Jacksonville on news racks and local businesses in key market locations.
