Floating Objects: Digital Image Editing

For Essential Homme's May/June 2013 Most Wanted section I was tasked with creating the illusion that these items were floating. I have shown the before and after shots so you can see the editing and manipulation that i had to do in order to create this effect. It was primarily a matter of cutting out the products from their original environment then adding shadows where necessary to create the floating feel.
We stuffed the pants with paper and plastic bags to give it shape then held the pants in the desired position to give the illusion that they are moving. This was a much more difficult process than it looks. It's a lot easier if you have a mannequin designed for this purpose, but in a crunch stuffing the clothes with bags or pillow stuffing can do.
These were not too difficult, it was basically a matter of extracting the bags then creating the new setting.
These shoes had an added challenge because it would have been too difficult to shoot the pair in their final positions relative to one another (shown above). So we shot the shoes at the desired angles then the shoes were cut out and repositioned in photoshop. The next challenge was to complete the illusion by adding shadows to the shoes so the relationship is more believable.
These shoes were for our New Arrivals section. The main challenge here was to position the shoes how we wanted them to be in the end.
