Wiggle 3D introduction
- the simplest way of displaying 3D without the use of 3D glasses

Example 1

Type: Simple Wiggle 3D
Source: 35mm digital stereo rig
Channels: 2
Alignment: Middle
Media: 256 grayscale animated GIF
Frames: 2
Interval: 2x0.2sec
Pixel dimensions: 400x400
Size: 137KB
Example 2

Type: Soft Wiggle 3D
Source: 35mm digital stereo rig
Channels: 2
Alignment: Middle
Media: 256 grayscale animated GIF
Frames: 4
Interval: 4x0.1sec
Pixel dimensions: 400x400
Size: 258KB
Example 3

Type: Simple Wiggle 3D
Source: 35mm analog stereo rig
Channels: 2
Alignment: Middle
Media: 64 grayscale animated GIF
Frames: 2
Interval: 2x0.2sec
Pixel dimensions: 400x400
Size: 239KB
Example 4

Type: Soft Wiggle 3D
Source: 35mm analog stereo rig
Channels: 2
Alignment: Rear
Media: 128 grayscale animated GIF
Frames: 4
Interval: 4x0.1sec
Pixel dimensions: 400x400
Size: 460KB
Example 5

Type: Soft Wiggle 3D with alternating intervals
Source: 35mm analog stereo rig
Channels: 2
Alignment: Rear
Media: 64 grayscale animated GIF
Frames: 4
Interval: 2x0.1sec (1st & 3rd), 2x0.05sec (2nd & 4th tween)
Pixel dimensions: 400x400
Size: 320KB
Example 6

When using wiggle 3D for film or stopmotion every frame has to be wiggled...

Type: Simple Wiggle 3D stopmotion sequence
Source: 35mm digital stereo rig
Channels: 2
Alignment: Middle
Media: 128 grayscale animated GIF
Frames: 24
Interval: 24x0.1sec
Pixel dimensions: 400x400
Size: 683KB
Method overviewComparing this method to the most common 3D methods like
Real D (Avatar movie 3D) and Stereoscopic 3D (anaglyph):
Alignment examples
Same image but different stereo alignment
Front aligned
Center aligned
Rear aligned
Principle
Often cats wiggle their heads before jumping a large distance. They are doing this to determine the chances for a successful jump. By using different angles they calculate the distance to their target, just like a GPS in a car uses the satellite signals to determine it's position on earth. It is called Triangulation and it is the basic principle in this type of 3D interpretation. This is also the only way a one-eyed person is able to visually experience 3D.

Photography
I did example 1, 2 and 6 plus the alignment examples using a custom digital rig. I shot example 3, 4 and 5 using my homemade analog 3D camera: Show me the camera (Behance project link)

Viewing
Most viewers will notice the 3D effect right away. The effect will often be enhanced by putting a slight distance to the monitor, stepping back or viewing the image from different angles as if it where a painting and thereby distracting the mind enough to perceive the 3D effect.

Mind bug
Contrary to common 3D with two channels (left and right) it is theoretically possible to add an infinite number
of channels when making a Wiggle 3D... Example: 100% left, 75% left, 50% left, 25% left, center etc.
