Like many people, my wife and I love to travel. A few years ago, we started a tradition of making personalized travel posters to hang in our TV room. The tradition, started a few years ago, had yielded up till now — one poster. So I figured it was catch up time. Here are a couple of what will hopefully soon be a large collection of travel destinations. Each is personalized to us, and highlights a place, perhaps obscure, which had some meaning to us.

While on a cruise in the Caribbean, we stopped in Puerto Rico, and set out for a little night excursion at Laguna Grande, a bay with rare bio-luminescent algae in the water. It was quite amazing paddling through the lush vegetation at night, and the vast lagoon itself was an incredible experience. As we paddled, it would disrupt the algae and they would begin to glow right around our paddles, and leaving little trails and swirls of light behind us. Such a surreal experience. But simply being out there at night, paddling in such a beautiful place is what holds a place in my memory.

I wanted "Puerto Rico" to be the text of the poster. But as you can see, it didn't fit compositionally.

We tried to go snorkeling at St. Martins while at port in St. Thomas. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time. So as a last minute gamble, we went to Magen's Bay — a beautiful beach, but not a snorkeling destination. The clear, sandy water around the beach was completely pointless for snorkeling; hardly any fish, and nothing interesting to see. But we decided to try going by some rocks by the far edge of the beach; and as we began to look around, we discoved a small, wonderland away from all the people at the beach: reef squid everywhere, sunning themselves near the surface. A wide variety of beautiful fish, and even a sea turtle. It ended up being the most fun we had snorkeling during our time in the Caribbean. And because nobody was there to snorkel, we had it all to ourselves.
