In September 2015, a renowned collection of more than 100 early American coins was sold at an auction. Part of the collection of D. Brent Pogue, the group included a 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar, also known as the Contursi dollar. One of these ultra-rare issues fetched $10 million in a 2013 sale.

Another key item in the collection was an 1822 Half Eagle, of which only three are known to exist. The other two are part of the Smithsonian collection at the National Museum of American History; the Pogue coin is considered the finest example of the three. Indeed, condition was a key reason for intense interest in the auction in the numismatic world, with the majority of Pogue’s coins attaining a ranking of 65 or higher on a scale of 70. This indicates that the coins either never went into circulation or were kept privately in pristine condition, without being used.
