Jurassic World Promo Spreads
Concept sketch progressions, 3d environment sets, and final renderings.
One of the more ambitious Lego scenes I have worked on. This scene becomes very complex with so many things going on. The key here is to nail the sketch, having all necessary elements and achieve a good flowing composition without being too cluttered.
Some of the subtle gags were taken out or replace with other objects. Malcom needs to button up his shirt. The raptor nail that Grant carries with him is on the serving plate that Ellie is holding. It was opt out to use pretzel instead. No wine glass in hands which may promote drinking, a soda can maybe.... In the end mugs with JP logo worked best since that's what we usually buy when we visit a theme park, right?
Here is the basic ground plan design for this scene. Really it isn't that complex.
Camera were set to appropriate angle referencing the comp. Characters individual key scenes were pose, light, and rendered separately overlay to match the approved sketch. Vegetation is on the last to do list.
Here is one of my earlier brainstorming sketch for the key art, which later revised and re-comp for one of four promo scene. It turned out that this 2nd image was also as complex as the 1st image.
I separated the key scenes into 3 main parts to keep things more manageable than my 1st image. However during the posing process, it turned out that the layout needed more breathing room and as a result, the left border was extended inorder to accommodate all Lego characters/pieces properly fit without compromising the original composition.
There were a few variations of this image with different versions of Claire's reaction.
The lab interior set is made up of simple square tiles based off reference from ingame footage. The fun part was to create the hole and the destruction around it. After that just the matter of posing/placing the dinos and characters in the right place matching the approved comp.
In the final image, the female lab technician was swapped out with Gray and Zach in the foreground.
Final render image.
