IT TOOK SOME TIME, since the last post, to get the chance to work on a project that could be shared or be talked about in a blog post (Oh! secrecy takes its toll). What happens nowadays is either going to see the light of day in the long run, or remain in the hands of the client for corporate use only. But when it comes to "personal endeavors", let's just say we know how to keep ourselves busy.
There'll be more on these in the near future, but for now, let's cut to the chase.
Weeks ago, in a joint operation including Montreal's MURAL Festival, La Maison Simons (Simons) and artist Melissa Del Pinto, we created a short capsule documenting said collaboration. Working once again with CURIOUS Montréal, our objective was to present Del Pinto's universe, her family and her fascination for birds: the central inspiration source behind her art.
Mixing public art, philanthropy, human storytelling and birds together in a two minutes video proved to be far simpler than we initially thought it would. Del Pinto's story was moving, her art was amazing and everyone involved in the making of this capsule was motivated and generous, to say the least. Musically speaking, mixing emotional storytelling, narrative voice-over and the somehow colder (let's say "cooler") side of electronic music together was a bit more challenging. Add a subtle sound design to liven the whole and voilà!
Here are a few musical inspirations and references behind this project: Ratatat's "Wildcat", for the usage of the mountain lion's roar, as a percussive element. We wanted to do the same thing with the owl's scream we'd captured while shooting. Moderat's "A New Error" for rythmic drive and general sound reference.
