"Numbers of Beauty"
The task was to select an object from the V&A Museum and design a poster elaborating text of about a thousand words as part of the design. The purpose of the brief was to consider the relationship between text and image and to reflect upon the underlying systems and structures of meaning in design by looking at it from a semiotic perspective.
The object I selected was the terracotta bust of Hellen Ionides from the Ionides Collection and wrote a critical text about the the complexity of relations between artist and patron.
The image I used in the poster is made of loose simple lines. During the interim crit, it has been noted a striking resemblance with the designs of join the dots images, hence my decision to transform mine into one. As well as making the poster more engaging, it further highlights the idea of a search for a beauty dictated by precise standards sought by artists and requested by patrons.
At last, in order to create a direct link between text and image, I have put numbers before each title paragraph, that consistently refers to the lines that trace each part of the drawing.
Since I had few small typographic style issues with the numerals, I easily solved the problem displacing the font with a ITC Century font.
