The Bhagavad Gita

This sketch represents a moment that is of great importance in the Hindu way of life. Krishna, the divine incarnate, speaks to Arjuna, his friend, disciple and cousin, and delivers to hiim the Bhagavad Gita. The event takes place in the midst of a battlefield, just as the Kurukshetra war is about to begin. Krishna is the charioteer and Arjuna the warrior. The Gita, literally means the Song of God. It is supposed to have been put into writing by the Sage Vyasa, who heard the words Krishna spoke to Arjuna through his divine foresight, and penned them down. This is also the moment when Krishna gives Arjuna the Vishwaroopa Darshanam, which means a vision of the divine. Arjuna sees that Krishna encompasses all of creation within him, including good and evil in the same measure. The Bhagavad Gita is also a part of the Vishnu Puran, which speaks of the legends and worship of Vishnu, of whom Krishna is an avatar or incarnation, and his consort Lakshmi.
