Iten, Kenya Running Culture Film & Art

Kenyan Running Culture Film & Art
David Lemanski and Felix Will are a photographer/filmmaker duo based in Germany who have brought the beautiful and inspiring running culture of aspiring long distance Kenyan athletes in Iten to the global stage.
With interviews on the training, life experiences and aspirations of this community they have created a film centering the journeys' of one of Iten's upcoming running teams. The athletic grit, the livelihoods and personal goals of these hardworking individuals are revealed and laid bare to prove beyond inspiring. In this narrative, Forward Ever Backward Never focuses on a team and 2 runners alongside their coach - Sylvia Kabutie, Ruto El Kana and Johnstone Koros, respectively.
Concept Thumbnails
Creating a film poster for this showcase was an exciting learning journey even though I couldn't meet them personally, I used their biographies and collections of their day to day activities to inspire the artwork.
Line and Color Sketch of Chosen Design
The first silhouetted design was the winner and we proceeded to colour layouts influenced by the Iten landscape and thematic inclinations of hope, daily life and the inspiring slogan.
Final Designs for Print & Digital Media
The design as a silhouette against a sunrise/ sunset was very important to show how tough and hard the team is on themselves to achieve their goals. Against the white it also serves the purpose of being easily applicable to different environments and media.
