TEXTURES OF GLACIER ICE – Iceland

Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier, captivates with its fascinating  textures and the breathtaking blue tones of its ice. These features arise from the compression of snow layers over time, resulting in distinct bands and textures within the glacier. The weight and pressure of the ice expel air bubbles, enhancing transparency and brilliance. As the glacier moves, it interacts with the underlying landscape, gradually eroding and shaping the ice, which exposes fresh surfaces and reflects light in various shades of blue. The result is a breathtaking display of glacial beauty, shaped by natural forces over centuries.

Most of the motifs in this series were captured in a glacier cave located inside Breiðamerkurjökull, which is a glacier tongue of Vatnajökull.
