Sylvia Plath's - Mirror
Bookwork - sample spreads
Sylvia Plath's artistic mission she wrote in her journals was to find her unique experience – those elements that made her “...a statement of a generation”. Therefore this bookwork is an attempt to illustrate just that. I wished to demystify the images of an idealised era and distant Plath’s work from her suicide, by placing emphasis on universal and contemporary value of feminist thought in her work.

The visual technique is a post-modern approach, with the intention of challenging notions of high and low art. This has been done by recycling images from 1950s adverts and combining them with found objects, original photography and illustrations. The result, is a work which questions the often marginalised tradition of women’s craft throughout the pages of the bookwork.

By reclaiming the rhythmic essence of Plath’s intimate words against repressive images of a decade I hope to highlight her voice. The voice which not only made her a statement of a generation but also has relevance in today’s society.

This bookwork was also the original context for the short film Belles Lettres – Mirror.
