Every year in December, my sister and I send each other an "Advent Calendar" - one e-mail each day (one e-mail every second day for each of us). We usually add photos or - in my case - illustrations too. It's always wonderful to have these intense e-mail conversations once a year, and to take part in each others lives, especially because we live on two different continents.
I developed these illustrations following a pretty much intuitive approach, oftentimes basing them on a quote or expression that I found funny, moving or interesting. Some of the illustrations are also just playful sketches that were later accompanied by a typographical element. This project is a good chance to approach an illustration with some given time pressure but no other constraints what so ever, which allowed for more playful and experimental techniques. I also had lots of fun to turn some of the illustrations into animated GIFs. The overall topic could be described as the search for mindfulness and an authentic life, while not being too influenced by the noise of the things happening around us.
