THE COLOURS OF ZEN - THE HOKUSAI SCARF COLLECTION

This collection was designed to explore the surface design/production possibilities. This collection explores the possible dye effects and production possibilities using the Japanese resist dye technique -Yuzenzome.

During the workshop, demonstrations were made about the things that had to be avoided to prevent the uneven application of dye and patchy surfaces. Thinking back about that, explorations were done to see if those undesirable elements could be controlled and planned to create surface textures that resonate with Wabi-Sabi aesthetics.

OBLONG 1
When the dye is applied to the surface before the resist dries, it starts bleeding from under the resist. The bleeding causes slight irregular colouration of the resisted parts. To amplify the effect and control the process, the resist is made of a different rice-bran proportion (1:1 rice to rice bran) . Adding more rice bran powder makes the resist more porous and less sticky. In addition to this, the consistency of the resist is almost liquid rather than paste and resulted in controlled and even effects. This piece was made to explore and train craftsmen on this technique.

OBLONG 2
When the dye is dried artificially with a blow dryer and allowing it partially dry in certain places creates patchy interesting surfaces.

OBLONG 3
This piece was made to explore the same technique as above in a different manner.
(controlling and planning the irregular patchy dye mistakes)This collection of scarves was made by planning and controlling these undesired dying errors to create aesthetic surface patterns that truly expresses ‘Wabi-Sabi’.
OBLONG 4
This piece was made to explore a different composition of the resist paste. the paste was made with less rice bran and more glutenous rice, that makes it more sticky and results in sticky, dense, sharper and thinner resist lines.

While exploring the possibilities of production/sampling to make the process faster and more production friendly silk screens were made for the application of resist. this part of the collection explores the commercial aspect of production/sampling whereas the part above explores the possibilities of creating unique surface design/texture using resist dying.
This collection was made inspired from the Hokusai wave series.
