Today’s economy is made possible by activities that put greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and those gases (collectively called CO2e, or just carbon) are causing climate change. We’ve known this for a while and it’s widely recognized as one of the most pressing issues of our time. As a company dedicated to both people and planet, BioLite takes full responsibility for its carbon footprint and is committed to mitigating its impact on the climate and as a result we’ve been carbon neutral since 2012. During a discussion between BioLite & Peak Design’s CEOs, we learned that Peak Design was also a carbon neutral company. The leaders united around their common belief that being accountable to carbon should be the new normal for responsible businesses.

Through direct experience with the offsetting process, they came to the same conclusion: calculating and offsetting footprints was remarkably easy and surprisingly affordable — leading them to ask why more brands weren’t doing it. Together, the teams explored the barriers to adoption and uncovered a simple insight: somewhere along the way, the carbon conversation got really complicated — and it fundamentally doesn’t have to be.

BioLite & Peak Design co-founded Climate Neutral Certified, an independent nonprofit that makes carbon offsetting as simple, actionable, and credible as possible. The certification enables brands to measure their footprint, identify opportunities to reduce, purchase offsets for un-reduced emissions and market their commitment to climate action to consumers through the use of the Climate Neutral Certified label. Pairing business’ need for simplicity with the planet’s need for urgent action, Climate Neutral is a platform that’s helping brands and consumers lead the transition to a low-carbon economy by placing a price on carbon within their business. To date, over 300 brands have become certified and have collectively offset 706,114 tonnes of carbon
BioLite and Peak Design launched Climate Neutral at the 2019 Outdoor Retailer Tradeshow in Denver, CO. Because the outdoor industry has a long history of being at the forefront of environmental awareness, this provided a good venue for the initial wave of brand recruitment.
KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN: As the Climate Neutral mark is ultimately a consumer-facing certification, it was important to build awareness early. Climate Neutral raised over $160k from 2,400 backers. Later on, Kickstarter itself came onboard to become a Climate Neutral Certified company.
