BioLite HomeStove

BioLite’s founders took their working CampStove prototype to a combustion conference where they discovered their technology could have a much larger impact: half the planet lives in energy poverty, lacking safe and reliable ways to cook, charge, and light their lives. Three billion people cook over smoky open fires every day, leading to 4 million premature deaths annually. These open fires also release significant amounts of CO2 and produce a staggering 25% of global black carbon emissions. (This is more than all the world’s cars and trucks combined). It was with these shocking numbers that Jonathan and Alec committed to building a business capable of bringing safe, affordable energy to those who need it most.

Based on the same heat-to-electricity technology as the CampStove, BioLite set out to redesign the cooking fire. Using an iterative user centered design approach, the BioLite team spent countless hours in the field gathering feedback to develop the most durable and cost-effective stove possible. The BioLite HomeStove is a large-format biomass cookstove that cuts fuel consumption in half and reduces toxic emissions by 90% all while charging mobile phones or LED lights.
