Subdivided Views

For many years now I have been photographing the landscape seeking to discover the many ways in which people interact, live and coexist with their environment. This body of work depicts an idealized view of nature that is fundamental to the subdivisions surrounding South Bend, Indiana and reveals both the landscape and the image itself to be a construct of culture and society. The color film is processes and printed with a limited color palate intended to imitate old color prints. In some of the images that shadow of the photographer appears at the edges of the frame, again implying that these places are representations separate from their referent and important because they were photographed. Knowledge and understanding of this place is gained through perception of representation rather than perception of the referent itself. These images idealize this place, its underlying bucolic nature and its crafted landscape.
