Joel Vandenbrink's profile

IBD Prevalence in the United States

A craft beer industry entrepreneur, Joel Vandenbrink founded the Seattle Cider Company and Two Beer Brewing Co. in 2007. Joel Vandenbrink also serves as a board member for the northwest chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, which has contributed more than $350 million towards research on the most challenging topics involving inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), risk factors, and prevalence rates.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Americans with a form of IBD is growing. Between 2015 and 1999, the percentage of adults with a diagnosis rose from .9 percent to 1.3 percent. IBD rates amongst children are not as well known, as most patients are diagnosed after the age of 20. More than 15 percent of people are diagnosed after age 60.

While men and women are equally susceptible to IBD, some forms are more commonly diagnosed in men. There also seems to be a correlation between prevalence rates, geographic area, and ethnicity. Research has also indicated some environmental factors as immigrants from countries with low prevalence rates experience a higher risk after living in the United States.
