From September 10th 2016 to January 22nd 2017, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) presented for the very first time in Canada a retrospective on one of the most influential contemporary photographer’s; Robert Mapplethorpe. Both in aesthetics and in the compositions of his photographic work, the search for perfection was undeniably at the core of the controversial artist’s practice. When observing his shots through various grid-focusing screens, it is then possible to notice and appreciate how rigorous was the artist once dubbed « The Hustler with a Hasselblad » when he was composing his photographs. The campaign as well as the official invitation where therefore strongly inspired by this constant pursuit of balance, aesthetic and minimalism while ensuring to showcase the artist’s provocative side.

Du 10 septembre 2016 au 22 janvier 2017, le Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal (MBAM) présentait pour la toute première fois au Canada la rétrospective de l’œuvre d’un des photographes contemporains les plus influents; Robert Mapplethorpe. Autant dans l’esthétisme que dans la composition de ses œuvres, la recherche de perfection fut indéniablement au cœur de la pratique de cet artiste controversé. C’est entre autres en observant l’ensemble de ses tirages, au travers des différents écrans-grilles de mise au point, qu’il est possible de constater et d'apprécier la rigueur avec laquelle l’artiste, autrefois surnommé « Le gangster avec un Hasselblad », composait ses photographies. L’invitation officielle ainsi que la campagne s’inspirent donc de cette constante recherche d’équilibre, d’esthétisme et de minimalisme, tout en s’assurant de présenter un univers à l’image de l’artiste; provocateur.
