Editorial Design & Illustration

A Selection Of Student Projects
Editorial Illustration is perhaps my favorite context for illustration save children’s picture books. I love the dialectic relationship between word and image and the world of periodicals offers a great opportunity to experience this.
These projects were created while I was a student at The American Academy of Art in Chicago, IL. As an illustration major I was required to not only create the illustrations within a professional schedule and context (reading the article, submitting pencil roughs, submitting comps, etc.) but to also create the editorial design context for each piece. This was to show our understanding of the relationship between a periodical’s layout, its article content and the finished illustration as published.

Deconstruction and Typography
This was a special project for an Independent Study in Communications. The first part of the project was to write the paper as any other term paper would be written. The second part, which was just as interesting and challenging, was to design the paper to reflect its content.
