project tiltle: I SHOT THE SERIF
client: PERSONAL PROJECT

As a graphic designer, I have always been interested in typography and its uses (practical and historical). The 50th anniversary of the typeface Helvetica gave me the perfect excuse to develop this project.

The poster I developed grabs the phrase of Bob Marley's song I shot the sheriff and transforms it to I shot the serif as a way of transmitting the idea of how the creation of Helvetica represented the summum of rationalism. The font was conceived (and it's still considered) to be as neutral as possible. A mere transmitter of the message without any kind of added ornamentation or serifs. It was adopted quickly and massively used hence killing (or shooting) the serif fonts.

As part of the same project I created the font POST MODERNA. A font in which I tried to analyze Helvetica based on the post-modern terms. Ornament is introduced in detriment of legibility and neutrality, since during the 80's the font was as important as the message (typefaces were a statement themselves).
