Hacking Habitat - Art of Control
International art exhibition in a former prison

About Hacking Habitat
HACKING HABITAT looks for alternative ways. How can citizens take charge and reclaim their environment? And how to keep our relations human? First of all, hacking habitat aims to encourage public awareness of a society mediated by technology. But the visual art manifestation also offers new tools enabling resistance against an excess of control and regulation: as a steppingstone to the exhibition four life-hack marathons will be organized. HACKING HABITAT will take place from February to June 2016 in the former prison at the Wolvenplein in Utrecht (NL).

Hack common typefaces
In the creative brief, there was this little detail that caught our eye: the client wanted us to 'work with fonts available on every computer'. So we took two well known, and widely used fonts: Arial Black & Times New Roman Bold. These fonts to itself were not particular appealing to us as designers, so we decided to 'hack' them. Soon, the marriage between ms. Arial and mr. Times was announced.

Government vs Individual
The typeface that was created is constructed from two different designs: the Arial Black, which to us is a very basic, stern and constructed typeface. In our concept, it stands for the government. The color that accompanies this government, is dark blue.
A color that exudes confidence.

On the other hand, we used the Times New Roman Bold, a typeface less constructed, more curved and with beautifull details. It stands for the individual. We used all sorts of colors to make each letter individual and different from eachother. Just like in the real world.

Both letters are irrevocably linked. Both are condemned to each other. Both need to balance eachother out.

Exhibition
The project runs throughout 2016. We are in the middle of designing different kinds of media and the exhibition. When we have some updates, we'll place them a.s.a.p.

To give ourselves some freedom in designing different media, we created a typeface with glyph variations.
