30 layers of wood and 30 O's
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of printer Libertas the people working there had decided to print a special book.
30 designers were invited to contribute to this book, Autobahn being one of them. Everyone had to design one letter. In our case, the ‘O’.
Printers in the Netherlands have a hard time. The rise of digital media and expensive paper costs causes a lack of assignements. So we were not surprised to hear there was no funding available for this project. But because Libertas had always delivered excellent service and helped us out with technical (printing) difficulties, we agreed to contribute. The O was going to be an experiment.
‘O’ is a great letter to use for typographic tricks. We decided to do anything with the sound nor meaning of the O, but to do something with the form.
Who can tell the names of these 30 typefaces, by just seeing the ‘O’?
We wanted to make an O that tells you how different each typeface is. Without using the O itself.
The differences between all these O’s are in the inner and outer lines. By placing them on one another, a strange pattern emerges. These sketches are quite interesting, but it’s still a bit too much of images that we already know and we had already seen.
That’s why we figured the project had to be placed out of the digital world into a ‘real’ environment.
We bought some wood, lasercut 30 O’s and installated them in some sort of wooden sculpture. They were like two miniature buildings: one like a Grand Canyon and one sort of home for ants or insects…
Studiolights shone through the wooden O’s, causing to form a special figure in the middle. By taking a photograph from straight forward, it's still possible to see depth. Are these figures approaching you, or are they really deep?
The result as far as we can see here, have some connections to microscopic, natureorganism National Geographic imagery, or the year rings of a tree for instance. But of course, you all know this is typography, right?
