Sugar Skull - Día de Muertos by Julio Lucas

I attempted to achieve a different style with this drawing then my other solely graphite pencil drawings. This is a standard ink pen and HB graphite pencil drawing of Día de Muertos - Sugar Skull. In the Mexican culture they celebrate the Day of the Dead which is observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The tradition of The Day of the Dead is a mixture of Catholic beliefs and religious beliefs of indigenous Mexican people, the holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico where the day is also a bank holiday. The celebration takes place on October 31, November 1 and November 2, in connection with the triduum of Allhallowtide: All Hallows' Eve, Hallowmas, and All Souls' Day.Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.

In the drawing the women's face is painted with a Calavera also referred to as a Sugar Skull. This face paint is a sign of respect to her lost loved ones. It also symbolizes a chance to overcome the fear of death, act recklessly and provides permission to engage in mischief that is forbidden at other times of the year. The flowers she is wearing are roses, carnations and Mexican marigolds which are considered the flowers of the dead.

This was originally suppose to be a ink pen drawing but as soon as I started working on the women's skin tone I realized the ink pen was to harsh and couldn't (a least with my amount of skill) achieve the look I was attempting to reach. So I brought in pencil lines and smudges to soften up the overall image.
