MSA was involved in the design efforts for the extensive renovations to the City of Hamilton’s existing 1960s Heritage-designated City Hall building. The project was undertaken as an Integrated Team Approach (ITA process), involving ABE and EllisDon Corporation as project managers and a multidisciplinary team that included Garwood-Jones & Hanham Architects, and +VG Architects.
MSA led the interiors portion of this renovation project. This involved programme verification, building audit, completion of the functional programme, user and support group consultation, design development of all building interiors (eight floors plus a basement), and coordination with sub-consultants for seamless building systems integration. The extensive renovations and improvements throughout the building preserve the building’s integrity and address its shortcomings and outdated infrastructure – the entire interior needed to meet the City of Hamilton’s Barrier-Free Guidelines (which are more stringent than the Ontario Building Code). Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, all of the renovations and selected finishes needed to be responsive and compliment the interior and exterior Heritage elements which could not be altered.
